Find Your Size - What You'll Need:
-
a small millimeter ruler or a flexible measuring tape
-
a mirror
-
a friend to help (optional)
Pupillary Distance:
This is the most important measurement for prescription lenses. It is the distance between the centers of your pupils.
Method 1: DIY with a Ruler
-
Stand about 8 inches away from a mirror.
-
Hold the ruler horizontally against your forehead, just above your eyes.
-
Close your right eye and align the 0 mm mark of the ruler with the center of your left pupil.
-
Without moving your head or the ruler, open your right eye and close your left eye.
-
Read the measurement on the ruler that lines up with the center of your right pupil. This is your PD.
-
Repeat this process a few times to ensure accuracy. The average adult PD is between 54 mm and 74 mm.
Method 2: With a Friend
-
Stand and face your friend, about 18 inches apart.
-
Have your friend hold the ruler just under your eyes.
-
Look straight ahead.
-
Have your friend align the 0 mm mark with the center of your right pupil.
-
Without moving your head, have them read the measurement that lines up with the center of your left pupil.
Bridge Width:
The bridge is the part of the frame that rests on your nose. A good fit here prevents the glasses from sliding down or pinching your nose.
-
Hold a millimeter ruler horizontally across the bridge of your nose, right where your glasses would sit.
-
Measure the distance between your pupils to get a rough idea of your ideal bridge width.
A simpler method is to measure the distance between the two lenses on a pair of glasses that already fits you well.
Average Range: 14 mm to 24 mm.
Pro-Tip: The position of your nose bridge also matters. If your bridge is low (level with or below your pupils) or narrow, you'll need a smaller bridge measurement. If it's high (above your pupils) or wide, you'll need a larger number.
Temple Length:
This is the length of the "arms" of the glasses, from the hinge to the tip that rests behind your ear.
-
Using a flexible tape measure, measure from the hinge (the screw that connects the temple to the frame front) to the tip of the temple arm.
-
If you have a pair of glasses that fits well, you can find the numbers printed on the inside of the temple. The third number is often the temple length.
-
Average Range: 120 mm to 150 mm.
A quick check: If the temple arms stick out significantly past your ears, they are likely too long and could cause discomfort.
