Find Your Size - What You'll Need:

  • a small millimeter ruler or a flexible measuring tape

  • a mirror

  • a friend to help (optional)

Pupillary Distance:

This is the most important measurement for prescription lenses. It is the distance between the centers of your pupils.

Method 1: DIY with a Ruler

  1. Stand about 8 inches away from a mirror.

  2. Hold the ruler horizontally against your forehead, just above your eyes.

  3. Close your right eye and align the 0 mm mark of the ruler with the center of your left pupil.

  4. Without moving your head or the ruler, open your right eye and close your left eye.

  5. Read the measurement on the ruler that lines up with the center of your right pupil. This is your PD.

  6. Repeat this process a few times to ensure accuracy. The average adult PD is between 54 mm and 74 mm.

Method 2: With a Friend

  1. Stand and face your friend, about 18 inches apart.

  2. Have your friend hold the ruler just under your eyes.

  3. Look straight ahead.

  4. Have your friend align the 0 mm mark with the center of your right pupil.

  5. Without moving your head, have them read the measurement that lines up with the center of your left pupil.

Bridge Width:

The bridge is the part of the frame that rests on your nose. A good fit here prevents the glasses from sliding down or pinching your nose.

  1. Hold a millimeter ruler horizontally across the bridge of your nose, right where your glasses would sit.

  2. Measure the distance between your pupils to get a rough idea of your ideal bridge width.

A simpler method is to measure the distance between the two lenses on a pair of glasses that already fits you well.

Average Range: 14 mm to 24 mm.

Pro-Tip: The position of your nose bridge also matters. If your bridge is low (level with or below your pupils) or narrow, you'll need a smaller bridge measurement. If it's high (above your pupils) or wide, you'll need a larger number.

Temple Length:

This is the length of the "arms" of the glasses, from the hinge to the tip that rests behind your ear.

  • Using a flexible tape measure, measure from the hinge (the screw that connects the temple to the frame front) to the tip of the temple arm.

  • If you have a pair of glasses that fits well, you can find the numbers printed on the inside of the temple. The third number is often the temple length.

  • Average Range: 120 mm to 150 mm.

A quick check: If the temple arms stick out significantly past your ears, they are likely too long and could cause discomfort.
